wine store - 14 September 1998The number of online-enabled PC households in Europe will reach 40 million by the end of 2002, according to new research from Datamonitor. The company's new report, Consumer Interactive Services in Europe to 2002, says that by the end of 2002, there will be 40 million online-enabled PC households in Europe, compared to 15 million households with digital set-top boxes. However, while the growth in online-enabled PC households will start to reach its peak by 2002, the growth for digital set-top boxes will continue until well into the new millennium. 29 June: Matrix Information and Directory Services (MIDS) estimated the number of Internet users at 102 million as of January 1998. In January 1997, the organisation suggested that the Internet was nearly doubling in size each year. The data for 1998 bear this out, according to MIDS which estimated estimated that there were about 57 million users, or about 56 per cent of the January 1998 number of users. 11 November: Internet Profiles Corporation (I/PRO) launched the Nielsen I/PRO Web Index (NIWI) a comprehensive indicator of changes in total traffic among ad-supported sites. The first release of the NIWI showed that traffic average grew 100.2% from January 1, 1997 to October 1, 1997.
