Gallo of Sonoma
County Series (Retail: $10-$12)
Produced from grapes grown on
Gallo's Sonoma vineyards, as well
as grapes purchased from neighboring
Sonoma County vineyards, these wines
are outstanding examples of the
excellence for which Sonoma County
wines have become noted. We prefer
their Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay
as a table wine over most all others in
this price range.
Here's the real story: In the 70's and before, Gallo became
known for their massive distribution of junk/pop wines. They
shipped millions and millions of cases. The name Gallo became
synonymous with the lowest priced, sweet, almost non-wine
that really introduced millions of us Baby Boomers to wine.
Their Gallo Of Sonoma Series
wines are extraordinary. They've won
too many wine awards to name in this
limited space. They rank with wines
costing $20 a bottle and the reason
they don't charge that much; people
still think that a wine with Gallo's
name on it is cheap and inferior.
While, under another name, these wines
would command much more per bottle,
Gallo, with huge promotions behind the
brand, is in the process of changing
the whole feel associated with the
Gallo name. Let me tell, you; there
just isn't a better wine, Cabernet
Sauvignon or Chardonnay, out there at
this price!
Gallo makes many other fine wines,
all worth a taste and/or look at.
